Turmeric 'Blue'

Black turmeric (Curcuma caesia) is a rare and striking variety of turmeric native to the forested regions of India, Nepal, and parts of Southeast Asia. Unlike the more common yellow turmeric, its rhizomes are dark blue to black on the outside, with a deep purple interior.

The taste of black turmeric is similar to yellow turmeric but with a more intense, slightly bitter flavor. It has a sharp, earthy heat and a somewhat astringent, pungent undertone. Its unique taste makes it ideal for enhancing savory dishes, particularly in traditional Indian, Nepali, and Southeast Asian cuisines.

Black turmeric has a dense, firm texture, and its rhizomes are harder and more fibrous than yellow turmeric. When cut, the flesh reveals a rich, dark purple or blue color. Due to its tough exterior, black turmeric is often grated, ground into powder, or sliced thinly for culinary or medicinal uses.

Used both in cooking and traditional medicine, black turmeric is valued for its potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, primarily attributed to its curcumin and other bioactive compounds.
